Denying a woman access to family planning is denying her of her fundamental rights, and those responsible for such denials should be held accountable.

Representative of a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Palladium, Bathsheba Halid expressed this while commenting at a one-day Breakfast Meeting With Media Executives and Development Partners organised by the Family Health Advocates in Nigeria Initiatives (FHANI) in Kaduna on Friday.

“Denying a woman family planning is a breach of her human rights. There is no point if a woman goes to a facility and consumables required for family planning are not available.

“If the government which has obligations to provide health to its citizens fails, or the community fails, those responsible for the failure should be held accountable,” she said.

She stressed that people must be held accountable so that they can begin to own up to responsibilities, to know how to address the rights so that the lives of women and children can be protected through child birth spacing.

Halid emphasized that it was important for people to their rights, so that they can own and claim them.

“Women need to get adequate information on family planning and child birth spacing, so that they can make informed decisions,” she added.

In his goodwill message, State Team Leader, Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health initiative 2, (NURHI 2), Malam Kabir Mohammed appealed to the media to make available more airtime and reports on family planning that would teach more communities.

He said the 20 per cent statistics of women using contraceptives was unacceptable, pushing for advocacy that would increase it to at least 80 per cent.

While speaking, FHANI’s PRO, Hauwa Saulawa begged media executives to help in spreading the message that child birth spacing saves lives.

“If a woman dies, she lives  surviving children who become burden to relatives. But if she is well enough and spaces children, the children grow up to be healthy and the father has more money saved,” she stressed.
