Even as the harvest season reaches its peak between November and December, the joy that one derives when anticipating the gains to reap from the fruits of the labour of farming season is high.
But in Madamai community in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, the joy of the farmers is cut short when they remember that it is a herculean task to get their produce to the access road from where they can take it to the market.
The community which is set on a highland with rocky nature, has from the time civilization reached the area been burdened with the fact that they have to trek several kilometres with yams on their heads, if they are to earn any income from their toil.
When Christian Aid Nigeria, sponsored a field trip to the community as part of its Voice to the People (V2P) project, it was gathered that those burdened with transportation of the yams on their heads to the road.
One of the women, lamented the hardship that they face while transporting their products, appealing to the authorities to act and bring an end to their suffering.
“We have been suffering like this, I started suffering this as a girl, I am still suffering it as a mother, but I don’t want to suffer this same issue as a grandmother as those before me and some are suffering now,” she said.
The woman who simply gave her first name as Asabe when asked why the men don’t assist in carrying the product, said that it was the duty of the women.
The Village Head, Galadima Bulus equally buttressed the point by appealing to local government authorities to help them in providing amenities that are lacking like roads, electricity and water.
In her remarks during the trip, Executive Director, League of Democratic Women (LEADS), Barrister Rebecca Sako-John informed that they have been working at the village since 2016 courtesy of the V2P project.
She explained that within the short period, a lot of success has been recorded.
But a member of the Voice2People working in the community expressed optimism that with the project’s impact the local or state government can actually assist the people by improving on their road.
