The Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria has fulfilled its mandate by contributing professional manpower to Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
Commandant of the school,Brigadier General M.M. Bunza expressed this while speaking at the maiden edition of the school’s sports week held on Saturday March 31, 2018.
“Since the establishment of the school in 1954, it has lived beyond its mandate for not only training and contributing professional manpower for the Armed Forces but also nurture and developed skilled manpower in all fields of human endeavour. Ex-Boys of this prestigious institution have made outstanding contributions within and outside the security circles both at national and international levels,” he said.
He explained that training in NMS is in two phases, involving academics and military packages.
“The intent is to ensure that the Boys are well prepared for military duties and future academic endeavour. Part of the most cherished activities in the school are extra-curricular training packages including physical activities.
“Accordingly, the school has continue to conduct extra-curricular activities for the Boys cumulating into series of competition at Company levels. The intent is to inculcate a healthy competitive spirit among the Boys, ensure physical fitness and mental alertness,” he explained.
He said that hitherto, these competitions were staggered across the academic session; however, the school has harmonized all sporting competitions into an annual sport week.
“These aim is to ease the administration of these competitions and also expand the spectrum with more stakeholders involved for the identification of talents among the Boys,” he disclosed.
The Commandant pointed out that the dream of the founding fathers of the school is to have an elite Nigerian Armed Forces that will replace the departing colonial personnel that were to handover the responsibility of securing the territorial integrity of Nigeria at independence.
“NMS was established to train mid-level manpower for the Junior leadership in the Nigerian Armed Forces,” he stressed.
He said that the activities for this sport week are scheduled from March 31 to April 4, 2018.
“Invitation have been extended to various Sporting Federations to ensure that the best practices and international standard are observed for all the events. Consequently, I urge all the officials to ensure that they put in their best in giving us a memorable sporting week.
He assured all the participants of fair officiating and level playing ground.
“I enjoin you all to put in your best to win laurels for your companies. Thank you all and God bless,” he concluded.
