Following the announcement that the Kaduna State Local Government polls would go on as scheduled on May 12, 2018, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has kicked, saying the date clashes with its party’s National Congress.
Voicing out APC’s view at an Emergency Meeting between Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) and stakeholders including chairmen and secretaries of political parties on Tuesday April 24, 2018 at the Ministry of Local Government Hall, Ibrahim Usman Abdullahi, appealed for postponement of the polls.
“If you conclude to hold the election on May 12, it would not be fair on the APC. What about the National Congress of APC to hold on May 14?” He queried.
In her response, the Chairman KADSIECOM, Dr. Saratu Binta Dikko-Audu said that they have out in so much into preparing for the elections to postpone it for the above stated reason.
“We have 68 parties contesting. If we have to consider conventions of all the parties before we fix our date, that means elections would never be able to hold,” she said.
Also against the conduct of the polls for a different reason, the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) argued that conducting the polls without the use of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) card readers, would not be accepted.
The Secretary of PDP Kaduna State, Ibrahim Wusono expressed this while speaking.
“It is the card readers we use in knowing the number of people. For INEC to say they can’t provide the card reader is strange.
“If you are not ready to conduct elections, do not the PDP will not accept this,” he said.
In her response the KADSIECOM Chairman said that they started talking to INEC about card readers two years ago until the recent development.
“We are shocked they are not giving us They said they y can’t give us 6,000 card readers because they are preparing for 2019 polls. If anyone here can convince INEC to give us smart card readers, we would be very grateful,” she added.
