One of the aspirants for the position of the National chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Clement Ebri has said that he is a very contented man and as such will stay back and build the party even if he does not emerge as the national chairman of the party, maintaining that his desire is to build a strong party and not for any selfish desire.
According him “the strength of a political party is in individual shelving their personal ambition for the collective good of the party. I am a very contented person, as such my desire is to remain and build the party. Some people have even said, because of the mess going on now, I should run for governorship and I said no. I was governor in my 30s, I want to give opportunity for the younger ones”
Mr Ebri was Governor of Cross River State between January 1992 and November 17, 1993.
He told journalists in his Calabar residence that his interest in becoming the national chairman of the ruling party was purely to strengthen democratic pillars of the nation through good party machineries.
“I am not a selfish person, I am not a self centered person. Lets put our best foot forward, that is all am saying”
He said he was eminently qualified to become the national chairman of the party considering his towering pedigree and experience having been a governor, and even a national chairman of a party before.
“I am not manipulative, I am straight forward. I love transparency. That makes me a better candidate, because I want to strengthen the party and make everyone have that sense of ownership. I may be quiet and humble but you don’t push me around. It is just that I am not noisy about it, I don’t dramatise it, but in a very quiet manner and what I would call, quiet dignity, I will do the right thing and people will be happy about it.
I know some PDP people and even ex- governors who have told me look, the moment you become the national chairman of APC we will all come over. What APC need now is not a bully, not a tyrant but someone who can rally everyone around. I will go to any length to protect people”
Although President Buhari is believed to favour the emergence of former governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state against incumbent John Oyegun. Mr. Ebri believes he is the best candidate for the job.
Mr. Ebri applauded President Buhari for his efforts in the area of economy and security.
“Before now the Boko Haram guys were firmly in control of about seven local government areas but now they are controlling none. I believe as soon as the weapons we are expecting start arriving everything will be settled”
He also praised the President the way he has been able to manage the economy even against huge drop in the global oil price as soon as he took over.
