The promotion of peace and development is the principal responsibility of the government.
Former Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam stressed this in her paper presentation during a one-day workshop organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Kaduna State Chapter, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna Council Secretariat on Wednesday.
“This is why section 24 page 30 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended mandates that:
“The state shall protect and improve the environment and safeguard the water, air,land, forest and wildlife of Nigerians and to further protect, preserve and promote the Nigerian culture which enhance human dignity and are consistent with the fundamental objectives.”
She further explained that Peace has no doubt place very high priority adding that without peace there will be no meaningful and appreciable development.
Mrs. Mallam Emphasized on the need for the government to provide peace and meaningful development characterized by security of lives and property and also the provision of quality education.
According to her, if there is good governance in which these and other services are delivered to the people and where equity and justice are the rule of law, the possibility of conflict arising from state activities will be reduced.
She further called on government to find a lasting solutions to the catastrophe ” we cannot understand the reasons of this sudden outbreak of insecurity in sone parts of our states.”
The Nigerian Women have been called upon to be peace builders for a good and better development of the country.
The NAWOJ Chairperson Kaduna State, Mrs. Juliet Oyoyo in her remarks, said that “we are all aware of the times we are today and there is a strong need for every one to understand the importance of this very key ingredient that fosters unity, development and nation building. This brings the purpose of the workshop which is the “Role of Women in Nation Building.”
“NAWOJIANS, apart from being journalists working under challenging conditions, are also home builders and partners in progress with our families and this is why we have chosen to take advantage of the opportunities afforded us to seek ways we can ensure a peaceful society for our children as women and mothers.”
On her part, Mrs Sekyen Dadik, the coordinator Africa Media Development Foundation AMDF said there is the need of involvement of women in decision making in issues related to security matters
She said when women are excluded in decision making processes their concerns and protection risks are not addressed at the community level.
The Chairman of Nigerian Union Of Journalists, Kaduna State Council, Comrade Adamu Yusuf in a goodwill message, said the Union will continue to support NAWOJ in every possible way and also called on state and federal government to address the security challenges faced in some part of the country.
The program with the theme: “Peace: A Veritable Tool And Instrument For National Development”. Is aimed at ensuring Peace at all level for National Development.
