The Nigerian Red Cross Society has lamented that they don’t get any form of support from any of the tiers of government.
Kaduna Branch Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross, Elder Sunday Oibe expressed this when they paid a courtesy call on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council on Tuesday.
He lamented that they are at the mercy of public spirited individuals to tackle logistics like fuel for vehicles and other needs for rendering of their humanitarian services.
“We have not received support from any tier of government. It is when people hear of what we have done, they come and we can get N50,000 to buy fuel for our vehicles,” he said
When responding to a question on the role they play in preventing crisis, he said that the Red Cross does not have capacity to prevent crisis.
“But unfortunately some of our men were rendering services to IDP camp and when the Air Force struck, they killed including our men and no one is catering for their families.
“But that doesn’t stop us from responding when called upon,” he added.
Oibe explained that as part of innovations, they have ene effecable to unite families scattered in various IDP camps.
“There are people who are in different IDP camps but we have reunited families. That is some of the innovations we are bringing on board,” he said.
The NUJ chairman Kaduna Council, Comrade Adamu Yusuf appealed to the Kaduna State Government to accord more priority to the Nigerian Red Cross Society in view of the crucial roles they play in the society.
He said that he was proud of the effectiveness of the Kaduna State Branch of the Red Cross.
“Let me give an example of Nasarawa State where I was correspondent for FRCN for three years, I witnessed no effectiveness of the Red Cross but here in Kaduna, I see Red Cross everywhere,” he said.
He assured them that Kaduna journalists are always ready to give good publicity to their activities.
“Whenever you have an event, just bring an invitation and I assure you that all journalists would be mobilised to give you maximum publicity,” he assured.
