After three editions of failure to pick gold medals in athletics event of the National Youth Games, Team Kaduna has picked a gold and a bronze medal at the just concluded fourth edition at the University of Ilorin.
Both medals came courtesy of Salisu Habib with a gold in the 409m and a golden silver in the high jump event.
The golden athlete, whom rumours have it us been eyed by the talent department of the Delta Sports Commission, stands out as one of the Most Valuable Athletes at the Games.
In an interview with reporters, Coach Felix Oseibe, who was the assistant athletics coach to the Games and a personal trainer of Habib, said he was excited about the feat.
“I sincerely want to thank God for His help, I also wish to thank the management of Kaduna State Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture for availing me with the opportunity,” he said.
He described the 4th National Youth Games as a huge success for them as a team, because the athletics team had never won any medal at previous editions.
“But with the help of God we won a gold and a silver,” he stressed.
“I really want to thank God because this is my first official assignment for Kaduna State.
“Salisu Habib who won both medals for us was the most experienced athlete in the team so I had to take advantage of his experience for instance I had to talk and put him through into taking high jump that he had never ventured into before and as God would have it, he won silver and later won the boys 400m final,” he narrated.
It would be recalled that in the maiden edition in 2013, Team Kaduna won a bronze in the 3,000m long distance race, which has since been scrapped from the competition.
