Governor David Umahi has expressed great shock over the death of the Vice Chairman of the Ebonyi State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ,) Comrade Samuel Nweke and commiserated with his immediate family and the union.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, Governor Umahi described his death as tragic and called for full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
He described Nweke as great journalist and believer in his administration’s resolve to develop all sectors of the state economy simultaneously using mass media as vehicle for social engineering.
The Governor further commiserated with the family of the late NUJ Vice Chairman, the Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation, EBBC and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in the state.
He expressed optimism that security agencies will carry out full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and bring the perpetrators to book while praying God to grant his soul eternal rest.
Samuel Nweke died along Nkalagu area of the state while returning from Abeokuta, Ogun State capital after attending the NUJ national delegate conference held on Friday.
It was gathered that some armed bandits intercepted their vehicle along Nkalagu axis and ordered them to lie down on the expressway when another vehicle on high speed ran over them and killed Sam Nweke on the spot while others including Pastor Peter Okutu of Vanguard Newspaper who are occupants of the vehicle sustained various degrees of injuries from matchet cuts from the armed robbers and was rushed to Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki where he is currently receiving treatment.
However, the state owned media outfit, Ebonyi Board Broadcasting Service, EBBC,has announced its temporal shutdown for 24 hrs between Saturday-Sunday 6pm in honour of the late sage.
According to State Commissioner for information and state orientation, Senator Emmanuel Onwe who made this known said that the decision was taken in order to mourn the great reporter.
Senator Onwe prayed for the eternal repose of late Nweke ,even as,he joined the entire state NUJ to mourn their Vice President demise.
