Mark Mentors Basketball Team have furnished reasons why they are not participating at the ongoing Kwese Sports Savannah Conference 6 Tournament.
Captain of the team, Stanley Gamut opened up while fielding questions from newsmen at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Indoor Sports Hall of the Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna, venue of the event.
He explained that the team decided to opt out because they didn’t want to be seen to be taking sides in the ongoing political battle of who heads the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), between Ahmadu Musa Kida who was among those officially inaugurated by the Minister if Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung and Dr. Tijanni Umar who was officially the president before that inauguration.
Gamut, who is the factional Athletes Representative in the Umar-led Exco, also has international basketball player, Ejike Ugboaja officially inaugurated for same position alongside Kida.
The talented player said that Mark Mentors would only be willing to compete in a conducive atmosphere, devoid of rancour, and is not interested in further complicating the leadership crisis.
It would be recalled that the Savannah 6 Tournament for the top best six teams in the Northern part of Nigeria playing in the premier division, started with a shock of the absence of Mark Mentors and Civil Defence Defenders.
The organisers acted fast and replaced both teams with Kada Stars and Bauchi Nets.
