Team Leighton on Sunday emerged champions of the 2017 edition of the African Patron’s Cup at the Fifth Chukker Polo and Country, Club, Kaduna.
They emerged winners after a week of thrilling actions that saw them emerge tops after a round robbin fixture in the thrilling high goal category.
In spite of losing the last match to hard fighting Keffi Pony’s, 6-7, their previous wins secured the prestigious trophy for them.
Though both teams started slowly in the match watched by several dignitaries, they put in more efforts towards the end of the 6th chukka.
After the 2nd chukka, both teams tied at 3-3.
The third chukka witnessed a goals drought as each of them fired blank.
Bello Buba inspired Keffi Pony’s however failed to increase steam in the 4th chukka as they trailed behind 3-6 at the end of that chukka.
They bounced back, scoring four goals in the remaining two chukkas to end the game 7-6 to win the Babangida Hassan Usman Katsina’s Team Leighton 7-6.
Notable dignitaries that watched the final included, former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose arrival caused a huge stir, Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable (Prince) Matthew Kolawole and the Public Affairs Manager (North), Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, Mr. Danjuma John-Ekele.
