Shop owners at the popular Marian market in Calabar Municipality were thrown into mourning as fire gutted their goods and shops.
Some residents around the area who spoke with AUTHENTIC NEWS DAILY said the fire began around 1am this morning January, 1, 2018.
Although the cause of the fire remain unknown, some said it may not be unconnected with a faulty power sockets in one of the shops.
A resident of the area, identified simply as Chris, who spoke with this reporter said ” I am just coming back from there now, the fire began about 1am and so far it has destroyed over 20 shops in the market with goods worth millions of naira gone down the drain, the situation is really terrible”
AUTHENTIC News Daily spoke with one of the shop owners on phone who said “I don’t have anybody to assist me right now, I am at Ikom LGA and my husband only got to join me just yesterday, as it stands all my goods have been destroyed”
Reports say when the state Fire service was alerted of fire incident, they said they could not assist because they had no vehicle and no water.
The latest fire incident would be the second in less than two months after fire gutted Watt market, one of the ancient city’s oldest markets last December.
