Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has charged accountants in the state public service employ to always ensure transparency in government transactions and efficient application of public funds to help government deliver its mandate on good governance and sustainable infrastructure development.
Ambode gave the charge today while declaring open a Two Day retreat organised for the accountants in the state public service by the Ministry of Finance, saying that efficient resource management and appropriate application of public funds is crucial to achieving good governance and sustainable infrastructure development which he said is the focus of his administration.
While advising accountants to see themselves as the custodians of public trust, Ambode urged them to use their innovation and creativity to assist government to achieve efficient management of its scarce resources, stressing that they should always be guided by the universally accepted principle of accounting in order to become financial solution providers to government.
The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, urged participants to ensure strict adherence to the rules of transparency and uphold the ethics of the accounting profession, imploring them to resist any temptation that will make them compromise their integrity at all times.
“My professional colleagues, let me reiterate that we are custodians and managers of financial resources, we must therefore ensure strict adherence to the rules and uphold the ethics of the profession , we must live above board, act professionally and resist the temptation that will make us compromise our personal and professional integrity” Ambode counseled.
The Governor while appealing to the accountants to key into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) introduced in the state by his administration, he noted that the on-going anti- corruption and re orientation efforts of the federal government has provided accountants in the country fresh opportunity to use their professional ethics to bring sanity back to the management of public corporations, noting that the public is watching on how far they can go in achieving success in this area.
While reiterating the commitment of his administration to the enhancement of professional skills and capacity building in the public service, the Governor explained that various economic reforms embarked upon by government are aimed at promoting accountability, transparency and reduction in the cost of governance, noting that accountants in the public service have crucial role to play in ensuring successful implementation of his administration’s reforms.
Earlier, the State Accountant General / Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Abimbola Umar, observed that the retreat was put together to allow accountants in the state public service rub minds and exchange ideas on how to achieve more professionalism in public account management.
She noted that since accountants are the custodians of public funds, they must live above board in transparency and see themselves as driving force behind successful implementation of any development project.
He also added that as professionals, accountants must be at the forefront of translating government policies and plans into concrete implementation in the overall interest of giving value to tax payers’ money.
She stated that the Treasury Single Account (TSA ) introduced by the Ambode administration has helped government to achieve transparency and accountability in governance as the system has not only eliminated idle funds but has also ensured proper cash management and monitoring of government revenue and expenditure.
The highlight of the retreat is the unveiling of new logo for the State Treasury Office which is geared toward transparency in public accounting.
