Former Governor of Anambra State and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday night paid a courtesy call on the Ebonyi State governor and Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum, David Umahi, at the Government House, Abakaliki.
Obi was received on arrival at the Presidential wing of the Governor’s Lodge by Governor Umahi, his deputy, Barrister Kelechi Igwe, some members of the state executive council and members of the state working committee of the PDP.
Addressing Governor Umahi and leaders of the party in the state, the former Chairman South East Governors’ Forum solicited the support of the governor and indeed all the stakeholders of the party in the state and South East at large towards the victory of the PDP in the forthcoming general elections.
He stated that the impression created in the media to the effect that some leaders of the party including Governor David Umahi were against his nomination as VP Presidential Candidate to Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate was wrong.
Obi explained that the leaders of the Zone only disagreed with the process leading to his nomination which he said was understandable.
Speaking further, Obi said that his nomination was not a personal thing but a collective opportunity for the Zone to correct the years of marginalization and neglect suffered by the Zone.
He therefore appealed to all stakeholders in the Zone to queue behind him to deliver the Zone for the PDP in the 2019 general elections.
“l am here as one of you. I have a long history with Ebonyi State and Abakaliki in particular. Ebonyi is my home. Right from the time I was a student at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) I visited Ebonyi very frequently with my friends from here.
“I have friends and business here. For me, this is my home; Ebonyi is my home.
“I am always proud of you and your leadership ingenuity in Ebonyi state and in South East. I know that my nomination wouldn’t have been possible except for what leaders like you did that gave us the first class primaries in Port Harcourt.
“Again, it was your leadership in South East that made the party to think of South East. For me, I never expected it. I never solicited for it.
“I am here to assure you that my nomination is not personal; it is for the Zone. This nomination will not be successful without your personal blessing and the blessings of other PDP leaders and stakeholders in the Zone.
“In this Zone, we have suffered marginalization and this is a good opportunity for the zone,” he said.
In his remarks, Governor Umahi congratulated the former Anambra governor for his nomination, promising to support him to deliver the zone for PDP.
He noted that the reports in the social media to the effect that he was opposing Obi’s nomination was wrong, saying he only disagreed with the process which shut out Ebonyi and Imo states in the nominee list scrutinized before the final nomination.
Umahi said the development was unfair to Ebonyi State.
Governor Umahi however insisted that the Presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, must come to negotiation table with the leaders of the zone and Ebonyi State in particular.
