Successes Recorded In Sustaining Unity, Economy Through Sports Must Be Consolidated – Minister

Sports in Nigeria has grown tremendously and contributed in no small measure to the socioeconomic growth and national unity of the country.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare expressed this, in an address at the opening ceremony of the 5th National Youth Games at the University of Ilorin on Tuesday September 19, 2019.
The Minister said that the successes recorded have to be sustained.
Represented by the Director of Grassroots Sports Development in the Ministry of Sports, Dr. Ademola Are, he said that it is his aspiration that this edition of the games will follow the established trend of producing podium athletes in different sporting events.
He urged participants to see their roles as a stepping stone to greater heights while bearing in mind that there is joy in participation and sportsmanship.
“Therefore, do your best in your respective areas, by competing clean, without use of prohibited substances as stipulated by anti doping agency,” he admonished.
Dare thanked President Muhammad Buhari’s for his magnanimity in granting approval  for the hosting of the NYG.
He also extended appreciation to the Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin and other management staff of the institution for hosting the NYG for a record third time.
The Minister recalled that the maiden edition of NYG was held in Abuja in 2013.
“I would like to refresh your memory about the success story of the maiden edition of the National Youth Games held in Abuja in 2013 where many talented athletes were discovered and groomed to represent Nigeria at the 2914 African Youth Games in Botswana and at the 2015 Commonwealth Games in Samoa respectively, where laurels were won for the country,” he said.
