The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) even though is presently affiliated to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has its own rules, which are recognized by the NUJ constitution.
Immediate past NUJ President, Alhaji Waheed Odusile expressed this in a goodwill message to the SWAN Triennial Delegates Conference, Port Harcourt 2019 on Monday October 7, 2019 at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.
“This is my second SWAN conference attended, SWAN is an affiliate of NUJ but has its own rules, which are recognized by constitution of NUJ. If they are outside rules of NUJ, I would be the first to say so,” he said.
He therefore, warned against desecrating SWAN as an association.
“SWAN must not be debased, SWAN must not die. NUJ must not be debased, NUJ must not die.
“Nobody must desecrate those institutions, they are greater than all of us put together,” he said.
He commended the outgoing executives, led by Honour Sirawoo for successfully leading the association to greater heights.
“I want to congratulate you for a successful tenure, the whole world is watching, so that good news comes out of here at the end of the conference,” he added.
Odusile charged SWAN members to always be respectful to their leaders, so same can be reciprocated to them in future.
“Honour your leader, respect him. If you cannot bow down for your leaders, nobody will bow down for you when you are there tomorrow. He won’t be there forever. Learn from him, so you can take SWAN to the next level,” he urged.
