Centenary Georgian Cup: El-Amin Suffer Rubicon Upset In Opener

As the battle for who wins the centenary Georgian Cup at the ongoing Kaduna International Polo Tournament 2019, defending champions, Kaduna El-Amin suffered a major upset as they lost to Guards Brigade Rubicon in their opening encounter on Monday.

Hard fighting El-Amin who trailed from behind from the first chukka as a result of two goals awarded to Rubicon who have lesser handicap equalized in the fifth chukka, only to concede two unreplied goals in the last of the six chukka thriller.


The first chukka ended 1-3, second finished 2-6, third was rounded up at 4-7 and the fourth grinded to a halt at 7-8.

To the delight of the spectators, El-Amin leveled up in the fifth chukka to bring both teams apiece at 8-8.
Rubicon slid two past El-Amin in the sixth chukka to bring the highly explosive encounter, watched be several dignitaries, including the Emir of Katsina to a dramatic end.

In an interview with newsmen after the pulsating game, patron of Rubicon and its number one player, Hadi Sirika said they were excited to have beat 14 times Georgian Cup winners El-Amin.


“We pray they lose to another team so we can win this centenary Georgian Cup. The Georgian Cup as you know, is the oldest polo trophy, carved out of silver in the 1700s,” he said.


Sirika, who is Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation said that in spite of work, he would be off and on shuttling between Kaduna and Abuja through out the tournament to ensure they emerge victorious.
