The Chairman Board of Trustees Alice Gombwer Foundation, Joseph Paul Gombwer has disclosed that plans for the 2020 edition of the foundation’s peace and unity soccer competition has commenced.

He disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen at the closing ceremony of the competition, held at the Kotoko Barracks Football Pitch on Sunday in Kaduna.

Gombwer explained that the competition which is organized in memory of their late mum ought to have been held in July, the month of her demise this year, but financial constraints prevented that, assuring that the 2020 edition will be held in July, like the first edition.

“By the grace of God, we are hoping to hold it next year by July. This year we could not because of financial constraints.

“We want to start planning for next year’s edition earlier, we are hoping to start soliciting for support,” he explained.

Comparing last year’s edition, he said that, last year there was basketball clinic and football tournament.

“We are trying to see if we can have an eight team basketball tourney before year ends,” he hinted.
On other innovations introduced in 2019, he said that they did a lot on peace building.

“We were able to make impact because before the matches we hold peace talks with the teams.
“So far it has been peaceful and we hope as they go back to their communities, they would be peace ambassadors,” he said.

On other improvements he said that  compared to last year, when they  had only trophies for champions, this year, they provided more trophies for special prizes in Best Goalkeeper and Most Valuable Player categories.

“We are also presenting branded t-shirts for the top four teams,” he added.

On ways they hoped to have improved but couldn’t, he wished they had more funds to make the publicity wider.

“I was hoping we would have more media coverage but the financial constraints limited us,” he stressed.
