The UN-Habitat has agreed to offer assistance to  Bauchi State to improve land Administration, Urban governance and Planning.

The agreement for collaboration was signed at the sideline of the World Urban Forum(WUF10) held in Abu Dhabi between 8th to 13th Feb, 2020 by the Director Regional Office for Africa, Mr Oumar Sylla and the Secretary to the State Government, Sabiu Mohammed Baba representing Bauchi State.

Mr Baba had earlier extended felicitations of His Excellency, the Governor of Bauchi State Senator Bala Mohammed to the UN body on the occasion, and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to a close and beneficial working relationship.

Other areas of assistance expected are for urban regeneration, capacity building and mapping, and facilitation of urban infrastructure investments.

The WUF is the largest assembly of urban planning and development practitioners and holds bi-annually.

A second agreement signed during the Assembly with the World Council on City Data(WCCD) would see the State receive  assistance towards establishment of data platform to enhance urban governance and planning, and to work with WCCD partners in accelerating the attainment of the SDG targets. Bauchi State is the second  in Nigeria after Niger State to join the WCCD Network.

At the event, the Commissioner of Lands & Survey, Professor Adamu Ahmed, had described the precarious nature of urban development in the state and the challenges of accomodating large IDP population, being issues of great concern, and that require support of the UN- Habitat and sister Agencies.

It would be recalled that the State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed has made commitment to giving priority to land governance reform and urban planning as vehicles to address poverty and for rapid transformation of the State.
