Kogi Medical Outreach: Lagos Based Woman With Parotic Tumor Gets Free Surgery

A successful surgery on a patient with the right parotic tumor for over nine years has been conducted at the week-long Medical and Surgical Outreach organized by Odumehaje Christian Medical Mission (OCMM) in collaboration with Raymond AKOR Memorial Foundation (RAMF) at Agaliga-Efabo in Olamaboro Local Government Area (LGA),  Kogi State, North Central Nigeria.

The removed mass to be sent to histology for confirmation.

Speaking shortly after the surgery, Medical Consultant and Registrar with the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Dr. Iduh Augustine Andrew who conducted the surgery said medical investigations on fine needle aspiration pathology during visits to different hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria confirmed that she had Benign Parotic Tumor which is likely to be  Pleomorphic adenoma- the most common tumor of the parotic gland.
The neck/ head surgeon explained that the mass was removed via a careful incision under anesthesia.
According to the neck/head surgeon, the facial nerve branches were carefully preserved during the surgery, especially the marginal mandibular brand, and the removed mass has been preserved and would be sent for histology for confirmation of the diagnosis – Pleomorphic adenoma.
Responding, the patient, Mrs. Joy Frank Shuaibu confirmed that she has been carrying the tumor for nine years and had visited different hospitals in Lagos but to no avail, due to difficulty and challenges around the facial nerves.
Joy Frank said all the hospitals visited in Lagos, always gave her an estimated billing of N300,000 to N350, 000 Nigerian naira ( $800 – $1000 USD)  in prep for the surgery,  which was quite difficult for her to raise ( since she’s of low socio- economic status as a Tailor).
She however expressed gratitude to God and the two organizations for successfully conducting the surgery without any complication and financial involvement.
She was said to have arrived kogi State from Lagos Sunday night, November 22nd, 2020 and became the first to be booked for surgery on Monday morning. Her surgery was done by Dr. Iduh Andrew on Wednesday, November 25th, 2020, in her home town Agaliga Efabo, Olamaboro Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria.
