18 Female Teams Storm Kaduna As el-Rufai Declares Zenith Bank Basketball Open


    No fewer than 18 teams are participating in the Zenith Bank Female Basketball League, which dunked off on Monday at the Umaru Yar’Adua  Indoor Sports Hall, of the Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna.
    Declaring the league open, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State said that his state was a home not just for basketball, but all sports.
    He welcomed the 17 teams from other parts of the country,  and the home team to the opening ceremony, while charging them to take advantage of the rich hospitality of its citizens.
    El-Rufai  said that with the quality of sporting facilities onground, he was optimistic that all visiting teams would not regret playing in Kaduna.
    Later during an interview, el-Rufai, who was represented by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Daniel Danauta said that the seven days of basketball action would be action packed  and eventful.
    He explained that the state government was doing its best at ensuring that sports is in its best in the state.
    Also fielding questions from newsmen, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr. Tijjani Umar said that within the last eight years, basketball has improved in terms of facilities and talents.
    He said that there have been constant competitions, seminars and trainings that have built capacity of the players and officials.
    Umar boasted that within the period under review, only football was getting more action and endorsements than basketball.
    The NBBF President assured that within the coming years, more improvements should be expected, even as he hinted that a new deal which will see to more progress was signed recently.
