In spite of little hitches experienced before the official opening ceremony of the third edition of the National Youth Games, the athletes have been well fed all through.
Project Officer Feeding, Dr. Toyin Aluko expressed this when fielding questions from newsmen at the games secretariat on Tuesday.
According to her, they are fed three square meals, prepared by over 10 professional caterers engaged by the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the games.
Dr. Aluko explained that bearing in mind the health and well being of the athletes, they conducted series of tests and interviews before settling for those that were finally engaged.
“I believe you watched the judokas in action in the hall. They use much energy in their sport and you don’t expect them to perform well if they are not properly fed,” she said.
She explained that bearing in mind the nutritional needs of the athletes and officials, the secretariat came up with a time table for the caterers, which is strictly adhered to.
An athlete. Ani Favour from Anambra State who spoke to said that the food being served was okay, but they were served a meal of ewedu and amala which they were not used to, but after they complained to the caterer, it was changed.
As the NYG actions continued Tuesday evening with athletics at the Unilorin Sports Complex, the athletes were seen in high spirits, cheering their teams.
