An amalgamated group of students body under the aegis of Coalition of Youth and Students in Kaduna State has given Governor Nasir el-Rufai an ultimatum of 14 days to revisit the issue of payment of scholarship to students of tertiary institutions in the state or face mass actions that would cripple activities at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House.
They expressed this after meeting in Kaduna on Sunday April 1, vowing to mobilise students from the 23 local government areas of the state to actualise their threat if actions are not taken.
Spokesman of the group, Comrade Adamu Adamu Matazu while speaking further, said that Governor el-Rufai got into office through their goodwill and is not repaying them in kind.
“Governor el-Rufai who got into office through the goodwill of students from Kaduna State has now failed them.
“When we talk of failure, fundamentally we talk of failure to fulfill campaign promises. The governor for three years has not paid scholarship to students in the state.
“When he was speaking at the Zaria Education Development Association (ZEDA), he described scholarship as 419.
” When he graduated from ABU with a first class degree, that time on scholarship, it was not 419. Why would he deny us of what he benefitted from?” He queried.
He wondered why the governor will advise poor people to go and farm, describing education not meant for everybody.
Matazu described as mere propaganda, the Kaduna State Government’s educational reforms.
“Right now as we are speaking, some schools don’t even have teachers after the sacking of former ones and the recruiting of new ones,” he alleged.
He said that they are in support of the Senate for not granting approval of the $350m dollars lian to the state government because it is against the interest of youth and students in the state.
Also speaking, the President of Basawa Constituency Students Forum, Mubarak Jidda said that he is calling on all students to support them to stop Governor el-Rufai from winning reelection in 2019.
