Maritime Workers Union Suspends Chairman For 2yrs

    In a bid to maintain good order and discipline amongst its members,the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) (Seamen, NIWA &Water Transport Branch), Delta State has issued a two year suspension to the former Chairman, Seafarers’ Unit, Escravos in Warri South-West Local Government Area, Comrade Tunokan Ebami.
    The suspension was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by Comrade Boro.B. Ekotoro JP and Comrade Olowojaiye Sunday, District Chairman and Secretary respectively.
    In a letter with Reference number: MWUN/SNWTB/DD/Publication-01,the MWUN also barred the former Chairman from contesting the forthcoming Escravos Seafarers’  Unit election.
    “He is also barred from representing the Union in any capacity and forbidden to set foot in the District or Unit Secretariats”.
    The MWUN also put on notice all Marine Companies operating in the Escravos axis,NIMASA as well as the relevant Government and Security Agencies and the general public following the suspension of its former Chairman, Comrade Ebami.
    The MWUN said the suspension takes effect from Monday August 6 2018 to Wednesday 5 August 2020. “The District’s action is in accordance with Rule 12 Paragraph IV(e) of the Unions Constitution.”
    The MWUN explained that the suspension of the former Chairman is coming after the District rose from an emergency meeting on Friday August 3,2018 where several issues of urgent Union importance were discussed.
    The MWUN said the suspension is as a result of “Comrade Ebami’s continuous acts of insurbornation, gross misconduct, willful disobedience and gross violation of the Union’s Constitution.”
    “The Suspension is contained in the communiqué issued at the end of the District’s meeting, takes effect from Monday 6th August, 2018 to Wednesday 5th August 2020. The District’s action is in accordance with Rule 12,Paragraph IV(e) of the Union’s Constitution.
    In a swift response, the suspended Chairman, Comrade Tunokan Abami threatened legal actions against the District Unit noting tha he has not received any suspension letter to that effect.
    He said,” That information I have not gotten it. I have not got any letter for my suspension. They don’t have the right to suspend me.
    “There is an issue and I told them that they’re bias, they’re corrupt. If there is an issue like that, I will sue them to Court. They don’t even have that right.”
