Soon, no military or para military agency will be able to beat the Nigerian Police Force Sports Team, as plans have been concluded to resume recruitment of sportsmen and women into the force.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of Sports, CP Ali Bala Kakanba disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen on Tuesday night after the closing ceremony of the One Service One Medal (OSOM) Games, which his agency won by clinching 65 medals.
He explained that for over 10 years, the Police Force has not deliberately recruited sportsmen.
“In terms of sports among agencies in the country, the Nigerian Police remains number one. We have produced many stars that have made the nation proud vat several international outings. The Sunday Bada, Chioma Ajunwa and a host of others were groomed to stardom and fame by the force,” he added.
CP Kakanba said that life span of active sportsmen is at it peak between three to five years, a development that makes it imperative to recruit fresh sports people periodically to replace those that are aging.
On the perceived dominance of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) especially as they emerged tops at the recently concluded Ministry of Interior Games (MIGA) which was also held in Kaduna, he said the events chosen favoured them.
“The events featured at the MIGA Games favoured the Civil Defence Team. They should make all events available and see if the Police Team will not dominate,” he added.
On the performance of this team that saw them emerge winners of the third edition of OSOM, he praised his team.
“As you can see, our sports loving IGP has motivated our athletes well and their performance at OSOM goes a long way to show the result of the motivation,” he added.
He praised the organisers of OSOM for high standards recorded, while being optimistic that Team Police will still excel at the next edition of the annual event.
