The APC Solidarity Forum has lampooned former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof Chidi Odinkalu for what it described as his “meddlesomeness over the tragic killing of 66 fulanis in Kajuru Local Government recently”.
The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Hafiz Aliyu Kujama accused Prof Odinkalu of “gate-crashing into a sensitive security matter concerning innocent victims and survivors of organized mass murder by unknown gunmen on the eve of election” adding that “he should allow Governor Nasir Elrufai as the chief security officer of the State to continue with his commendable moves against reprisal attacks”.
The statement also quoted Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN) as declaring that “the number of victims of this unprovoked attack could be higher than the official figures, as we are currently working on missing breadwinners of the victims’ families.
“Since 2017 when some 86 people were killed by the same unknown gunmen, that orgy was followed by similar isolated attacks, for which no one has yet been prosecuted”.
Turning to the era of Prof Odinkalu as National Human Rights Commission Chairman, the APC Solidarity Forum noted that he was not new to controversy as a strategy for seeking public attention
“Vanguard newspaper reported exactly three years ago how Dr. Odinkalu engaged the then Executive Secretary, Professor Ben Amgwe in avoidable muscle-flexing, with dire consequences to staff unity. There was also a disturbing level of Federal Character abuses in the NHRC’s recruitment; a lack of vehicles for the investigation team of staff who reportedly used their salaries to investigate complaints brought to the agency; and even ended up being owed salaries for two years”.
The statement called on security agencies in the country to investigate “the subtle campaign of Dr. Odinkalu in his seeming defence of the suspected gunmen behind the killings in Kajuru”.
