A civil society organisation in Zamfara State, Northern Youths Assembly (NYA), has threatened to drag State Independent Electoral Commission, (SIEC), to court over the planned council election.

It would be recalled that Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC) has fixed April 27 for the conduct of local government council election.

A statement issued in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, NYA Chairman,  Comrade Manir Haidara, faulted the decision of ZASIEC to conduct election within two weeks was quite undemocratic.

“We are ready to drag ZASIEC to  court over its plan to conduct council election within two weeks”, he added.

According to him, the decision of ZASIEC was quite undemocratic and unacceptable to the electorate”, he added.

Haidara however, condemned the ruling APC for backing  undemocratic action of the electoral empire.

“The democratic culture is growing in other places, but reverse was the  case in Zamfara state, as even institutions vested to promote democratic culture are subverting democracy”, he added.

He wondered how a free and fair election could be conducted within 14 days.

“We are talking about free and fair election where political parties would actively participate, with full mobilization of the stakeholders, but the situation in Zamfara was a charade”, he stressed.

He appealed to all lovers of democracy to condemned the ZASIEC for its mission to destroy democratic culture in the state.
