SWAN Can’t Be Taken For Granted For Willingly Affiliating Self With NUJ – Ex President

Dignitaries on the high table of the Port Harcourt 2019 SWAN Triennial Delegates Conference at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday October 7, 2019.

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) was founded solely by sports writers and was never a creation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Ex President of SWAN and under whose tenure the association was affiliated to the NUJ, Barrister Steve Alabi disclosed this while delivering a goodwill message at the SWAN Triennial Delegates Conference, Port Harcourt 2019 on Monday October 7, 2019 at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.
“SWAN was founded in 1964 by sports writers and not created by NUJ. We decided to become affiliated to NUJ but that should not be taken for granted by anyone who attempts to unsettle the settled,” he warned.

The ex president charged members of the association to rally round its present leadership headed by Honour Sirawoo to frustrate efforts of those attempting to rubbish the independence of its statutes.
“No one should be allowed to do anything to desecrate the institution that has attained this height,” he said.

He praised the national executives of SWAN, led by Sirawoo for taking the association to greater heights.
” I and on behalf of my colleagues are proud of what Honour and his NEC has done in three years.

“Mr Sirawoo and his NEC have raised SWAN to great heights, anyone in right senses should be proud of it and not trying to bring it down,” he submitted.

Alabi said that Rivers State is a great destination because of SWAN and because of the Governor.
“We have been here three times and tasted of its hospitality which is unrivalled.
“We are also happy that each time we come, there is also a new thing for us to see, this time it is the Real Madrid Academy,” he said.
Speaking further, he said that in developing sports in the country, there is the need to ensure that only people passionate about its growth are allowed to come up as administrators.

“We must continue to challenge sports administrator to look at sports not as something they can get from it, but from something that they can help to grow.
“We must look for ways to ensure we get credible President for our federations,” he tasked sports writers.
