Promote, Protect Human Rights For Sustainable Devt, CDHR Tasks Youth



    Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), has tasked Nigerian youth to promote and protect human rights in order to mentain development.

    The group gave the task in Warri, Delta State on Tuesday, during a symposium organised to mark the 2019 United Nations International Human Rights Day.

    Speaking on the theme ‘the role of youths in promoting human rights for sustainable development’, former state chairman of the body, Comrade Godwin Umukor (Esq.), described youths as a “critical force” that can ensure sustainable development in the nation.

    He stressed t”he need for human rights education is for young people to understand fundamental human rights, that where “rights are not protected, there may be crisis and development cannot take place”.

    Hd slso Stated that it is the turn of youths to take the mantle, the elders having played their parts, he noted that youths can create awareness about the rights to clean environment, freedom of speech, movement and the ‘Not Too Young to Run’ Act, through “activism and advocacy”.

    “The youths constitute the cornerstone of sustainable development. Human rights translates in social and political reality. The role of human rights education has the ability to create change in the community

    “If you don’t fight for human rights today, you can’t sustain development. The impact of the youths if not felt, cannot make emblem,” the lawyer emphasized.

    Present at the occasion are national vice president, Comr. (Dr.) Kehinde Taiga, state secretary, Comr. Jonathan Giama and several members from across the state.
