Though no fewer than 16 events will be competed for at the 6th Kaduna State Sports Festival billed to commence on Monday, the main focus will be on athletics.
Commissioner of Sports Development, Professor Kabir Mato, disclosed this to newsmen at a press conference held at the ministry’s board room, Murtala Square on Saturday.
Professor Mato, represented by his SA Media, Ismaila Lere, explained that they would focus more on athletics, because the state has already qualified for 23 team sports at the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF), billed for Edo later this month.
“Kaduna State had already qualified for 13 team sports for the NSF from zonal eliminations in Kebbi.
“We have to use this sporting activities to select our athletes, as such, athletics will be given priority at the state sports festival.
“Ahmadu Bello Stadium will be the epicenter of activities. Opening ceremony and all athletics events as well as closing ceremony will be held there,” he said.
Speaking further, he said that several venues will be used for the competition.
“We have severat venues for this activity. About six venues will be used including the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna Township Stadium, Kaduna Recreation Club, Kaduna Club, Police College, Kaduna State University and Hamdala Hotel,” he informed.
On sponsorship of the event, he said that it is being shouldered by state and LGAs with the state along up 60 per cent of the responsibilities, while 40 per cent is on the LGAs.
“For logistics in terms of accomodation and feeding, we are taking care of accomodation of all participants at the Hajj Camp, they will take care of feeding,” he added.
He commended Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Ltd for supporting the sports festival.
Answering a question on the level of preparedness to counter health scare of contagious diseases, he said they have taken adequate measures to ensure comfortable accomodation in a healthy environment.
“We are involving the ministry of health all through their will be health personnel at all the venues. Things will go well Insha Allah,” he assured.
