How 13-Year Old Ebonyi Boy Drowned In Soak Away

Governor Umahi

A 13 year old boy, Master Okeh Mark, penultimate weekend drowned in the soackaway pit within their compound in Amokwe Umuhuali of Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State.
Briefing our reporter at the village of the incident, a source and a member of the Umuoga family who preferred anonymity said that Master Okeh Mark was a JS 3 student of the popular Madonna Secondary School, Umuhuali before the ugly incident in the area.
The source said that the boy and his mother and his other siblings relocated to Amokwe after a case between their mother and her husband about 3 years ago.He also said that the mother of the boy disagreed with or had issues with her husband from Mgbo in Ohaukwu LGA, 3 years ago and decided to return to her parents, at Amokwe Umuhuali and never went back till the incident.
He further stated that the mother of the victim, is a sister to the immediate past chairman of Ishielu LGA, Hon. Henry Eze and has been residing at their Amokwe country home with her children.
It was gathered that on that fateful black Saturday, the boy disappeared but they did not notice the disappearance immediately. When they shared food item in the afternoon and they could not see him for his shares, they began to look and search every nook and crannies but to no avail. They even went as far as the Eke market.
It was toward evening time that they approached the area of the soak away pit near the outgoing chairman’s new storey building that the body of Mark was seen floating on the pit water and an alarm was raised.
He also said that the family wondered why the boy went to the soak away pit, some distance from their resident. They reasoned it could not be in search of water because, even in their compound water tanks were erected. The incident was received with mixed feelings.
Some who spoke with the reporter expressed shock that the former chairman, who relinquished power early June to rest allowed such matrimonial case involving his sister to continue for such length of time. The reasoned that if the case had been settled years ago, the woman (mother of late Mark Okeh) would have either gone back to her matrimonial home or remarried. They also wondered why such pits were left open in the vicinity where children play.
The corpse was however removed to mortuary pending further action and arrangement with family of Mr. Okeh at Ngbo before burial
