By NWOGHA NDUBUISI ANDY, Abakaliki
The opposition party leaders under the umbrella body of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Ebonyi State chapter has elected Comrade Obasi James Alina of Action Alliance (AA) as it’s new state chairman.
Announcing the results at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office, Abakaliki, the national chairman Inter Party Advisory Council,Dr. Leonard Nzenwa who was accompanied by other officials commended the state chapter for their peaceful disposition during the exercise.
This followed the dissolution of the leadership of the former caretaker Chairman, Comrade Samuel Nchita Akahite and his committee members in the state.
Other officials elected were Udume Evo Samuel of ADC as the state Deputy Chairman, Nchita Samuel Akahite of ADP as the Secretary and Kate Ohakam of APM- Deputy Secretary.
While Chief Ricky Okorouka of APGA emerged as the Treasurer, Austin Nweze Ituma of SDP – Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ogbonnaya Igboke of APC – Organising/Welfare Secretary, Nkwuda Sunday of YPP – Financial Secretary and Idoma Samuel of PRP – Legal Adviser.
Earlier in his remark, the National Chairman of IPAC, Leonard Nzenwa, stated that in Nigeria today, only 18 registered political parties are still the members of the Council, following the deregisteration of about 74 political parties on February 6, 2020 by INEC.According to him:”The Independent National Electoral Commission on February de-registered 74 Political parties out of 92 we were on the onset as members of IPAC, leaving us with 18 Political parties.
“So, our status now is 18 Political parties and others now, political association. As am speaking, it is18 political parties that formed IPAC leadership in the country. We are aware that the 74 political parties are still in the court with INEC after their deregisteration . They are not in the court with IPAC.
“Therefore, you can’t be a member of IPAC unless you are in a registered political party. But if you are in any political party not already registered by INEC, you can’t be a member of IPAC. This should be made clear.
“If in Court or INEC resolves to re-enlist the 74 deregistered political parties, it means that they will not come back to IPAC, but INEC should re-register them to become authentic members of IPAC,” he cleared.
He added: “As I speak, the circle of the judgement has not been accomplished and the 74 deregistered political parties are not the members of IPAC but only a political association and have not exhausted their matters with INEC.
“It should be clear because we are standing on the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, also on the mandate and authourity which INEC has given to political parties in the country.
“I hope this is very clear, if you go about tommorow, and any of them begins to tell you, he is a member of IPAC, just tell him that the rule is that any political party not spelt out or established according to the political system in Nigeria, and overseen by INEC, is not a member of IPAC
“Having made this clear, any individual, entity that came and claim to say that he is a member of INEC should be disregarded, because there are certain individuals that have been going about claiming the membership of IPAC whereas they are not.”
The National Chairman however, congratulated the new executives of IPAC and advised them to lead by example in the state immediately after their inauguration by the INEC official.
Interacting with newsmen , the Special Assistant to Ebonyi State Governor on Inter Party and Labour Matters, Comrade (Mrs)Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor commended the peaceful atmosphere witnessed during the election and charged the new officials to carry all the members along.
She lauded members for their support and for the massive turn out witnessed during the exercise which was above seventy five percent, charging the new officials to continue working for advancement of democracy in the state.
Meanwhile, the new State Chairman, Comrade Obasi James Alina in his acceptance speech expressed joy over his election, hence, appreciated the national IPAC leadership and the members, even as,he commended INEC roles to have a reformed council in the political system of the country.
Alina called for the cooperation of IPAC members to effect positive change in the state, and also extolled the leadership of Governor David Umahi whom he said, has been supportive to every good course of IPAC with his artilleries.
“Most importantly, I thank the government of our dear state, our workaholic governor who has always supported every good course of IPAC in the state.
“In the same vein, I must state categorically, that the impact of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter Party and Labour Matters, Comrade Mrs Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, has been so remarkable. When you came in 2018 as the first female Chairman of the council in the state, you so much transformed the Council and left indelible legacies that have given birth to the “New and Reformed IPAC” which we have today in Ebonyi State. Thank you for laying a very good foundation for us to consolidate. I believe I will continue to receive benefit of your experience and wisdom,” he stated.
Some of the elected officials, Engr. Ogbonnaya Igboke of APC been the new state IPAC’s Organising/Welfare Secretary, Comrade Nchita Samuel Akahite of ADP – the new Secretary of the Council, among others expressed happiness for their election and assured of contributing to the success of the council in the state.
Reacting on the new development, Hon. Morgan Nwogba led faction of Inter Party Advisory Council described the election as a handiwork of Political jobbers who are in disguise romancing with the Ebonyi State government to swindle them of money.
According to him, there was no immediate plans for any election as they are still in court pending when final verdict would be issued before fresh election.
“I’m the state chairman of Ebonyi state chapter, Inter Party Advisory Council,IPAC, and I don’t think election will be conducted without my knowledge.
“I have spoken with our national president Chief Nwosu and he confirmed that there’s nothing like that in Ebonyi State,so, Opposition Parties election is not something you will carry on secret because you have to buy form and campaign for support.
“Meanwhile, there’s no way election would be conducted in Ebonyi because we are having matter in the court.
“The issue of deregisteration,we took them to court and on 10th August,2020;we got judgement at Court of appeals which was presided over by present president of court of appeal but INEC said they were not comfortable with the judgement.
“They took us to supreme Court which there’s no way election would be conducted when we are still in court. It may interest you to know that those who came, and are parading themselves as national leadership are the accompliance of the Special Assistant to the governor who are in the state to extort the state Governor.
“I called our national president this morning to confirm the authenticity of the day said election but he confided on me that there’s nothing like that, so, if anybody is coming, the security agencies should do their work because they are not members of IPAC.
“Let me tell you, INEC can never monitor the election because they know the law and aware of our case in the court. Also, like I told you before, there are people who hide under a Union to perpetuate a crime and as I speak here is my members of my executive who knows the process things must follow in IPAC.
“The election is being spare headed by SA to the governor on labour matters and since she handed over to me had been trying to distract activities of the state chapter which we have been stopping her.
“To prove that what they are doing are kangaroo election, most of the political parties she claimed are among the recognized political parties are here among SDP, Zenith Labour Party and others but in all,it will be effort in futility.
Corroborating the statement,Mrs. Uzoamaka Dolphin, state chairman Advance National Democratic Party and Legal Adviser to comrade Morgan Nwogba described the newly elected officials as impersonator, and threatened to sue them to court for breaching the law.
Others who spoke including the state chairman Zenith Labour Party, Comrade Sabastine Obiya and Engr.Innocent Alobu, acting Chairman, Massive Movement of Nigeria Party faulted the exercise and described participants as agents of government who are disguised as party chairmen to extort the state government.
