The brand new captain of the club, Engineer Aminu Bagudu disclosed this at the tournament on Saturday.
“We set out to have 150 players, but we had about  170 people that registered,” he informed.
He explained that although   economic down turn affected tournaments in the club, however, new sponsors are realising importance of golf and the club is set to host tournaments regularly.

“We are hoping within our tenure, we would have tournaments every quarter.
“As you can see today, lots of people came here and hotels filled up.
“We are expecting two tournaments here, the Downstream Tournament for NNPC  domiciled here will be coming up soon as well as the Governor’s Cup,” he disclosed.
On what the new management of the club is set to achieve, he said that they intend to build on what the previous management did.
On widely believed notion that golf is a game of the rich and powerful, he disagreed, saying that it is for everyone and has advantages over other sports, especially for senior citizens.
“Golf is neither elitist or a lazy man’s game.
“Whether you are hypertensive or  have other underlying ailments, you can play golf till 90 years, unlike football,” he informed.

Also speaking, a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the club, Architect Mohammed Dewu described the change of management of the club as a welcome development.

“It is  good thing that the club has change of management and when it takes place, the captain has to host the club as tradition demands, it marks beginning of his tenure.
“This is beginning of new era. We are hoping to support him to succeed,” he said.
He described the Captains Inaugural tournament as interesting.
“It was an interesting game, everybody plays his handicap in several categories.

“The turn out is very encouraging. It shows the personality of the person who is our new captain,” he added.

A former Grouo Managing Director of NNPC, Engineer Andrew Yakubu, who is also a BoT member of the club in a separate interview, said that the new executives of the club emerged based on popular demand.

“The new Excos that came are popular choice of members of the club.
“We had an AGM about 40 days ago. Our expectations is to see the club grow from strength to strength, since it was established 100 years ago in 1921.
“We expect the new management to hit the ground running and do a good job,” he said.
On the Captains Inaugural Tournament, he  said, “the game was great.”
