Barring any last minute changes, all preparations for the hosting of the latest edition of Africa Athletics Federation sporting event have been concluded to take place in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Prof. Kabiru Bala while briefing newsmen shortly after inaugurating various committees saddled with responsibility of ensuring success of the sporting event which will see contingents from 14 African Nations competing among themselves on track and field events.
Some critical committees inaugurated, according to Prof Bala include; welfare, security, accommodation, media, medical among others, adding that activities would commence in earnest on Saturday with participants taking part in marathon race.
The academic guru further explained that relevant security agencies such as the Army, Police, DSS, Civil Defence among others had been contacted and some had already sent their men to the venue of the event to ensure an adequate security cover for participants and officials throughout the duration of the event which he revealed would end on Tuesday next week.
President Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Engr. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau congratulated Nigeria and ABU as the hosting nation and institution, describing it as a great opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s ingenuity in sports and hospitality, which he said would go a long way in laundering image of the nation to the outside world, particularly in the midst of the current security challenges.
Gusau, who is also Vice President Confederation of Africa Athletics Region II, expressed optimism in the ability of the hosting institution to give a befitting and hitch-free event, adding that the event would have been held long ago but had to be put on hold due to COVID-19 pandemic.
