Osun Sports Summit Ends, Stakeholders Optimistic Of Prospects

The much talked about Osun State Sports Stakeholders meeting organized by the Senor special Assistant to the Governor Gboyega Oyetola on Sports Development, Vincent Akinbami took place on Friday at the Oshogbo Township Stadium with sports technocrats, coaches, retired sports administrators and coaches, athletes   and goverment officials baring  their minds on issues bedeviling sports in the state.
A former General Manager of Osun Sports Council, Apostle Peter Adedeji talked about the importance of coaches in sports development.
According to him, without them, every other efforts will amount to waste.
He said the state needs not less than four  coaches in every sport in each zone and that  zones should be identified with some particular sports of comparative advantage.
The former General Manager of  Osun State Sports Council also said that all the associations/sports need  buses for easy transportation. 
He also suggested that a tartarn track be laid at the Oshogbo Township Stadium, as well as  an indoor sports hall. 
A former weightlifting coach and administrator, Chief Okoro and Mr Oluudare Jacobs, in separate remarks, called for a sports policy blueprint  in the state and that  scheme of service for the sports council should be put in place as it   is a unique agency  from others.
Chief Okoro added that in sports sector, promotion is not based on education but on performance.
Empty stores in the sports council was also  seen as a hindering factor, showing that there is lack of sports equipment and facilities.
Poor incentives in terms of allowance and employment was also talked about.

The need for equipping the medical department was also raised as there was said to be no budget for drugs. The department was also said to have no pharmacist, neurologist, among other staff.
The need for opening of more offices for accommodating as well as employment of staff at the stadium, including security and gardeners was also raised.
Some of the participants called for other sports to have their own budget, which for now, only football has.
The need for more investments in sports was also emphasised, describing the sector as a political, social and economic weapon in the hands of government.
A cry was also made for more construction of more stadia across the state.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Sports,  Alhaji Adelabu Adegboyega called for unity among the people in the sector.
The organizer, Honourable Akinbami appreciated all the contributions made.
He however,  called for the support of private individuals and companies to support the growth of sports.
He said the reason behind the stakeholders meeting is to hear from all to know where the problem is.
Akinbami promised that all problems and the way forward identified will be pushed to the  Governor Gboyega Oyetola who is eager to make positive changes in the sports sector.
He appreciated Living Trust Mortgage Bank for supporting the event.
