It was all celebration and fun galore on Thursday at the Community Hall of the Cyprian Ekwwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Area 10, Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) hosted and gave cash rewards to athletes who represented Abuja at the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival which held in March 2021.
For their efforts at the Nigerian version of Olympic Games and making the nation’s capital proud, the FCTA under the leadership of Minister of the FCT, Mallam Musa Muhammad Bello and his Minister of State, Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, splashed the sum of N400,000, N250,000 and N150,000 on gold, silver and bronze medallists respectively.
Speaking at the event, Tijani Aliyu commended the athletes for representing the FCT well in Edo while adding that the FCT Administration will continue to empower the youths through sporting activities and added that the administration will continue to provide the necessary incentives and infrastructure for the athletes to excel at national sports meet.
FCT Acting Director of Sports, Luka Istifanus, commended the leadership of the FCTA for the cash reward for the athletes.
He said the cash would go a long way in taking care of the immediate needs of the athletes and will also serve as a moral booster for them to always give the best in the colours of the FCT.
Istifanus added that the FCT has already commenced preparations for the National Youth Games (NYG) while expressing optimism that the athletes will fly the FCT flag high at the games which will hold between October 10 and 19, 2021.
The FCT Sports Award which was the 12th in the series was first held in 1989 after an excellent performance by FCT athletes at the Lagos 1989 National Sports Festival.
FCT finished in the 16th position on the medal table at Edo 2020 with 6 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals.
