A group, Directorate of Volunteers, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Support Groups have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, Director General of the Department of State Service and other security agencies to investigate the ill treatment and high handedness meted on opposition parties including People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State by Governor David Umahi.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the group through its Director, Hon. (Prince) Darlington Peter Onwe described as worrisome, the violent attacks and manipulative political and security gimmicks orchestrated by Governor Umahi’s led Government against opposition parties in the State.
He described as undemocratic, the actions and hinted that if not checked would be an invitation to anarchy, blood bath, break down of law and order in the state.
The group alleged that the Governor is using State forces to resist, frustrate and disrupt political campaigns of opposition parties, citing the violence attack against the convoy of the State APGA Governorship candidate, Prof. Ifeanyichukwu Odo on 2nd February, 2023 by heavily armed gunmen suspected to be members of Ebubeagu, an armed militia forces established by the government of Ebonyi State for hounding and vilifying members of opposition parties or interest groups, killing his driver, set vehicles ablaze while many others were left with varying degrees of bullet wounds.
They called on the Inspector-General of Police and other Security Agencies to call Ebonyi State Government and its militia EBUBEAGU to order before it would be late, noting that if the ill treatment continued they would have no any other option than to meet actions with equal and opposite reactions.
The group further accused Governor Umahi of behind the rising poverty index, deteriorating of human development, poor ease of doing business and increase of security challenges bedevilling the State, adding that the Governor has been rejected by Ebonyians for his evil deeds.
However, they disclosed that civil servants have been dying in their numbers due to denial of their rights, poverty and frustrations orchestrated and supervised by the State Government under the watch of Governor Umahi.
Hence, enjoined every eligible voters in the State to shun all forms of intimidation, vilification and suppression but vote for PDP at all levels in the forthcoming general elections to accelerate economic development, and industrialization of the State.
Also, for the citizens to enjoy an improved infrastructure, true, honest youths and women empowerments as well as institutional reform, rule of law and cohesive security infrastructure while vowing to foil and respond any further provocation
